What's New in Weed Control?

It has been a quiet year in terms of new modes of action for herbicides in corn and soybeans. Co-packs, tank-mixes and generic products have dominated the latest batch of registrations. Here is the advanced scouting report on the newest weed control options for 2003.

Corn Weed Control

See Table 1 for the summary.

Roundup Transorb + atrazine (Monsanto)

A good tank-mix option for Roundup Ready (RR) corn if you anticipate multiple flushes of broadleaf weeds since atrazine will provide follow-up residual control. However atrazine can cause antagonism where perennial weeds are a problem. Timing: Post-emergent.

Roundup Transorb + Marksman (Monsanto)

Another good tank-mix option for RR corn if you anticipate multiple flushes of broadleaf weeds since Marksman will provide residual control. Again, the atrazine in Marksman can cause antagonism where perennial weeds are a problem. Timing: Post-emergent.

Summit Extra (Syngenta)

A co-pack of Accent + Summit. Research conducted by Peter Sikkema at Ridgetown College has shown that this combination provides good control of horsenettle. Timing: Post-emergent.

Topside (UAP)

This is a mixture of MCPA/MCPB and is equivalent to Tropotox Plus or Clovitox Plus. Timing: Post-emergent.

Ultim Total (DuPont)

This co-pack of Ultim and Distinct is the successor to Ultimax. Distinct offers very good control of many perennial species. Expect decent control of field horsetail, but not as good as Ultimax. Timing: Post-emergent.

Soybean Weed Control

See Table 2 for summary.

Touchdown iQ (Syngenta)

| Top of Page |

A new glyphosate option for use on Roundup Ready soybeans and canola. Timing: Post-emergent.

Roundup Transorb + Pursuit (Monsanto)

This tank-mix is targeted towards growers who plant wide row soybeans (20" or more), historically have late- germinating weeds and would prefer to use one in-crop herbicide application. The addition of Pursuit will add residual control for weeds on its label.
Timing: Post-emergent.

Roundup Transorb + Assure II (Monsato)

This tank-mix will control volunteer RR corn in RR soybeans. Roundup alone will provide excellent control of volunteer corn in a RR soybean crop, provided the volunteer corn does not have the RR trait. Timing: Post-emergent.

There are a number of new "burndown plus residual control" tank-mixes for use in corn and soybeans with both glyphosate and Gramoxone. For a complete list, refer to Publication 75, Guide to Weed Control.
