Food Safety Research Program (2001-ongoing) funds research which helps improve Ontario's food safety system by creating new methods for detecting pathogenic microorganisms and drugs in food as well as methods of mitigating those risks before the food gets to your table. Calls for Letters of Intent are issued annually. There are funding opportunities as well as summaries of funded projects with this program. Life Sciences and Agri-food Innovation Fund (2006-2009) promoted and accelerated the pre-commercialization development of new products and services in the Agri-food and related Life Science sectors in Ontario. The program provided funding for projects that clarified or enhanced the commercial value of existing intellectual property and made it more attractive to potential investors. This program is closed to further funding but has summaries of funded projects. New Directions (2001-ongoing) funds research which creates new and alternative products and technologies helping the agri-food industry expand into new markets at home and abroad. Industry, rural communities and organizations, other levels of government and research institutions partner with academia in this research program. Calls for Letters of Intent are issued annually. There are funding opportunities as well as summaries of funded projects with this program. Nutrient Management Joint Research Program (2006-2008) supported the development of environmentally effective and scientifically robust management practice options for land application of agricultural and non-agricultural source materials in Ontario. This program is closed to further funding but summaries of funded projects are available. Other Research Projects - these projects were also funded by OMAFRA and summaries of research results are available. OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreement 2008-2012Overall ProgramThe Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the University of Guelph (UofG) signed a new and enhanced Partnership agreement on April 28, 2009 for research, laboratory services and veterinary clinical education. Theme ProgramsResearch funded by the Partnership is divided into the following seven theme areas which were adopted by OMAFRA's Minister on the recommendation of the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario:
Archived Research Programs: 1997-2008Bioproducts Programs' (2005-2008) purpose was to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable economy by replacing petroleum-based resources with renewable plant-based resources. Petroleum-based products are limited in availability and are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The program was funded through the previous OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreement 2003-2008 and is no longer accepting proposals. Summaries of funded projects are available. Food Research Program (1997-2008) focused on three main areas: 1 - Food Nutrition and Health; 2 - Food Safety, Traceability and Assurance and 3 - Food Quality which included value-added opportunities and waste management. The program was funded through the previous OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreements and is now closed to further funding. Summaries of funded projects are available. Resource Management and Environment Program's (1997-2008) purpose was to improve the planning and management of natural resources for different agroecosystems in Ontario such that environmental quality and a competitive agriculture and food system are sustained. It was funded through previous OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreements and is now closed to further funding. Summaries of funded projects are available. Sustainable Production Systems' (2005-2008) purpose was to enhance the long-term global competitiveness and sustainability of Ontario's agriculture and food system through excellence in research. The program was funded through a previous OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreement and is now closed to further funding. Summaries of funded projects are available. Sustainable Rural Communities' (1997-2008) purpose was to fund research which would contribute to the sustainability of rural Ontario by undertaking research that was effective in improving the economic, social and environmental conditions of rural communities. The program was funded through previous OMAFRA-University of Guelph Agreements and is now closed to further funding. Summaries of funded projects are available. Research CompendiaEnvironment
