Rural Economic Development Data & Intelligence
If you're involved in the local economic development process in rural
communities across Ontario, you've come to the right place. Whether you're
a community leader, an economic development professional or citizen volunteer,
this site will help you identify local priorities and carry out strategies
that will achieve your community's goals. Find out more about:
Business Retention and Expansion
Business retention and expansion
is a community-based economic development strategy with a focus on "taking
care of, nurturing and supporting" businesses already existing in the community.
A structured business survey is utilized as a means of beginning a dialogue
with local businesses with the intent of identifying issues, concerns and
potential opportunities and taking action where appropriate.
BR+E works
to improve the competitiveness of local businesses by identifying and
addressing their needs and concerns and building on business development
opportunities. This is crucial to the sustained viability of communities
since businesses that stay competitive are more likely to remain and expand
in the community.
Northern Ontario Heritage Fund
The aim of the NOHFC
is to work with northern entrepreneurs and businesses to foster private
sector job creation while supporting critical infrastructure and community
development projects that build a foundation for future economic growth
and enhanced quality of life.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation
The
Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ministry of
Culture. OTF distributes $100 million of government funding each year
generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative.
FedNor
FedNor
is a federal regional development organization in Ontario that works with
a variety of partners, as both a facilitator and catalyst, to help create
an environment in which communities can thrive, businesses can grow and
people can prosper.
New Directions Research Program
The purpose of the New
Directions Research Program is to stimulate the sustainable growth
and competitiveness of Ontario's agri-food sector through investment in
innovative and high quality research in partnership with industry, rural
communities/organizations, other levels of government and research institutions.
Since 1999, the program (formerly called the Special Research Program)
has committed $11.0 million to 180 research projects at a wide variety
of public and private research institutions.
Market Readiness Program
The four-year, $46-million Market Readiness Program will provide innovative
companies across the province with the initial financial support, management
expertise, training and proven leadership they need to get new discoveries
to market. The result will be "born in Ontario" companies that remain
here, create jobs and compete in the global marketplace. The Market
Readiness Program has two components:
- Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF)
$29 million
Through this initiative, eligible, knowledge-based companies with high-growth
potential will be able to access funding to help get over start-up hurdles
- including both the lack of money for initial testing and development
of technology and also the lack of entrepreneurial know-how.
- Business Mentorship and Entrepreneurship Program $17 million
Entrepreneurs can apply to the Business Mentorship and Entrepreneurship
program for help in getting the necessary management skills to take their
new high-tech product or service through to the marketplace. The
program has four parts: 1) Entrepreneur Training; 2) Business Mentorship;
3) Serial Entrepreneur/Business Executive Program and 4) Angel Network.
Ontario Research Commercialization Program (ORCP)
The Ontario Research Commercialization Program (ORCP) is a key component
of the government's Research and Commercialization Strategy. The overall
goal of the new, three year, $27 million program is to increase Ontario's
innovation capacity.
The ORCP will help create an efficient commercialization system in Ontario
that will accelerate the movement of world-class research from Ontario's
labs to the marketplace and support the growth and development of Ontario's
technology based companies.

Research Commercialization Program is available on the Ministry of Research

Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP)
The Eastern Ontario Development Program
(EODP) is a $10 million, short-term contribution to a program aimed at
addressing socio-economic challenges in Eastern Ontario. This funding,
from the Government of Canada, will allow rural Eastern Ontario communities
to pursue the creation of a competitive and diversified regional economy
through investment in community economic development, small business growth
and job creation. The EODP consists of six funding elements including;
Business Planning, Skills Development, Youth Interns, Local Initiatives,
Community Capacity and Access to Capital.
AMI (Agricultural Management Institute)
The AMI
will provide funding for projects to develop business management tools,
products, information, resources and training for farm families, farm
managers and farm business advisors. Approved projects will address issues
found within one or more of AMI's
five categories of focus such as: Benchmarking and Business Management
Best Practices; Business Risk Management; Business Succession Planning
and New Entrants; Human Resources Development and Training and Innovation
and Market Opportunities.
